New Dimension Chorus presents 'Friends and Family'
The New Dimension Chorus is a group of men who love to sing and who offer a good deal more than just music to the community.
Over the last five years the men of the New Dimension Chorus have contributed over $25,000 to relief efforts, cancer research, and local school programs. Additionally, they regularly perform at local retirement homes and at community events throughout the Tri-city area.
The Season of Giving continues on Saturday, Dec. 9, at 3 p.m. with their Holiday Show "Friends and Family 2007" at the Prince of Peace Lutheran church in Fremont. This beautiful new facility is a perfect location to showcase the chorus and its guest quartets. Joining the chorus will be the men of the United States Marine Corp, who will be on hand to collect toys and donations for their annual program, Toy for Tots. With the cost of tickets set at only $5, the chorus is asking that guest bring along a new unwrapped toy, or donation.
This year has been a landmark year for the chorus, as they have placed well in local competition, and traveled in late September for their first time to a special level competition in Phoenix, AZ. The chorus is a part of the 26,000+ member Barbershop Harmony Society. They sing and compete in the Far Western District, which is made up of choruses from California, Nevada, Arizona, and Hawaii. In the spring, they placed 2nd in their Division, and are currently ranked 16th out of 80+ choruses
Traditionally, the songs they sing are all a cappella (without musical accompaniment), primarily in the style known as Barbershop. The rich harmonies are made up of four "voices", composed of the Lead, which is normally the melody, and the Bass, the Baritone, and the Tenor, which fill in the harmony parts. This unique style of music normally has a lyrical quality, rich with overtones, as its singers seek to "ring" chords, which create sounds an octave above and below those notes actually being sung. The arrangements can be challenging, and the men of the chorus continually seek to perfect their craft.
The chorus Director, Demaster Survine IV, loves to direct and teach. He has been trained in directing at Director's College, part of the Harmony University, and he awaits final "certification". The chorus is continually looking for men, of all ages who love to sing. Currently, they offer a class as a part of the Chabot Community College Adult Education Department. All are encouraged to come and join them on any Thursday night at 7 p.m., in room 2340.
