Tri-Cities' Junior Midgets (players 12-14 years old) played Albany Ravens in the semi-finals of the Northwest Regional this past Sunday, Nov. 18, at Townsend Field in Santa Clara. The Titans, who play their home games at Newark Junior High, were trying to advance to the regional championship this coming week-end.
After playing the Ravens to a scoreless stalemate for most of the first quarter (ten minute quarters played in Pop Warner games) the Titans put together a sustained drive to take an 8-0 lead at the end of the first stanza. The touchdown was scored by "Mr. Do Everything" La Ron Sanders. Sanders followed the TD by kicking the PAT, which is worth two points in Pop Warner. A PAT by a run or pass only counts for one point.
Tri-Cities had another scoring opportunity at the end of the second quarter when quarterback Jesse Tate found wide receiver Talot Aleem with completion inside the Raven five yard line. However, the play was called back on a holding penalty. After Albany held and took over on downs, defensive back Anthony Babb intercepted a Raven pass to keep Albany scoreless at the end of the first half.
Both offenses were able to move the ball during the second half of play and even though the two teams' defenses were bending, neither one would "break". A lot of Tri-Cities' strong defense was attributed to the "booming" 30 to 40-yard punts coming off the foot of the Titans' Sanders. Sanders' last punt near the end of the fourth quarter traveled about 50-yards with the roll and pinned the Ravens inside their own 5-yard line. Albany's last ditch effort to move down the field for a score ended when Tri-Cities' Elijah Muhammad intercepted a Raven pass with less than a minute to play to give the Titans an 8-0 semi-final victory. The win improved the TC Jr. Midgets record to 11-1.
For the Titans' Jr. Midgets, it is on to the Northwest Regional final this Saturday, Nov. 24, 1 p.m. at Woodside High School, 199 Churchill Ave., Woodside, CA (near Redwood City). Their opponent will be Douglas Tigers of Nevada with the winner joining seven other regional champions in Orlando, Florida the following week-end for the National Championship. To win the championship, or Super Bowl, a team will have to win three games over a ten day period.
Tri-Cities' Jr. Midgets' Cheer Team won the Peninsula Conference Pop Warner Cheerleading Competition and will participate in the Northwest Regional Cheer Competition this Friday, Nov. 23, from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. in Toso Pavilion at Santa Clara University. They will compete against ninety other cheer teams with the regional cheer winners also going to Orlando the following week-end for the National, Pop Warner, and Cheerleading Finals.
It costs around $800-$1000 for each player and cheerleader to attend nationals, and that does not include parents. Since Pop Warner is a not-for-profit organization, if you would like to make a donation to help defray the cost of sending these students, who mostly live and go to school in the Tri-Cities of Fremont, Newark and Union City, plus Hayward and Milpitas, to Orlando, please mail or hand deliver it to Tri-Cities Pop Warner Football and Cheer, 4112 Margery Drive, Fremont, CA 94538.
Good luck the rest of the way Tri-Cities.
