The theatrical presentation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice will open on Friday November 9 at the Little Theatre in Mission San Jose High School. Jane Kendal's adaptation of Austen's classic not only brings out the humor, but also gives depth to the characters in the short duration of the play.

The many "starring roles" of this play are filled with students from freshman to seniors. A talented cast is led by Jordan Bickett as Fitzwilliam Darcy and Samira Ghassemian as Elizabeth Bennett. Sophomore Lance Smith, paired with Victoria Pham as Jane, identifies completely with his character Mr. Bingley. "It is just me. I am very much Mr. Bingley," he says with a charming smile.

Even juniors Emily DeStigter and Vasalissa Shvacko seem completely in tune with their flirty characters Lydia and Kitty as they hang on to the arms of the rakish Mr.Wickham played by freshman Karthik Raman. "The character of Mr. Wickham seems easy to portray but actually it is quite difficult to act as someone who always wants to take advantage of rich women," mentions Karthik with a smile.

Senior Jefferey Han, in his fifth show at Mission, plays Mr. Bennett with ease as does Beatrice Crosbie who is very much in her element as Mrs. Bennett, bent on marrying off her four daughters.

Actors will count on strong contributions behind the scenes as well. Teacher and director Anne Riley says, "I believe in directing as an educational experience and employ students in all positions." Student technical director Robert Martin not only coordinates the crew but also designed the set which recently passed a stringent test when it withstood the 5.6 trembler that hit the Bay Area. The student technical staff is rounded out by director Aura Aguilar, artistic director Monisha Alummootil and producer Anisha Alummootil.
