Huskies defeat Colts for second time, stay perfect in MVAL play

By Biff Jones

The Girl's Volleyball Team from Washington High of Fremont defeated Union City's James Logan High Colts for the second time this season, 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-22), last Thursday, Nov. 1, in a match played at Logan High. The victory ended the regular season for both teams, and they will now move on to post season play. Washington's Huskies finished the regular season at 12-0 in league play and 19-4 overall while Logan ended 10-2 and 11-9.

Both teams played semi-final games yesterday, Tuesday, Nov. 6, in the MVAL (Mission Valley Athletic League) end-of-season Shaughnessy Tournament at Washington High. Number one ranked Washington played #4 Irvington of Fremont, while #2 Logan played #3 Mission San Jose of Fremont. The two winners will meet in the championship game tomorrow, Thursday, Nov. 8, 7 p.m., at Washington High, 38442 Fremont Blvd., Fremont. If the Huskies lose in the semi-finals or finals, then the Shaughnessy winner will have to play Washington, as regular season champs, the next day, 7 p.m. at Washington.

That winner then qualifies for the Nor Cal Section (NCS) Tournament starting next Tuesday, Nov.13. Teams not winning the MVAL post season tournament will have to hope for an at-large bid to NCS or their season will be finished.

Players for Logan Head Coach, Danielle Anderson, are seniors: Stefanie Barnes, Christmie Jonson, Angelina Pascual, Jhoanna Pugrad and Aimee Silva; juniors: Molly Hancock, Courtney San Nicolas, Natally Servino, Taryn Thomas, Corina Tietze; and sophomores: Dana Llarena, Mimi Lu, Lisa Nguyen and Shellysa Patolo.

In last Thursday's match against Washington, the leading players for the Logan Colts were: Lu 8 kills; Hancock 6 kills, 12 digs, 1 ace; Barnes, 2 kills, 2 aces, 5 blocks; Thomas 13 digs, 1 kill; and Silva 15 assists, 7 digs, 2 blocks. For Head Coach Aaron Bennings of Washington, leading Huskie players were: Christina Roma 7 kills; Tenaya Davis 5 kills; Morgan Woodrow 7 kills, 9 digs; and Megan McLeod 4 kills, 22 assists, 3 blocks.

Thanks to Logan parents, Elizabeth and Rick Silva, for their input on this story. Good luck to both teams the remainder of the season.
