Firebirds, FC Fremont Girls Under-12 House League team completed a 12-0 regular season with victories over two tough teams. They defeated second-place Lunachics, 2-0, on Saturday, Oct. 20, and won 4-1 over the Tidal Waves, Monday Oct. 22. In the showdown with the Lunachics, Cindy Tafolla scored an early goal on a cross passing from Raquel Rodan. Rodan then added another goal before halftime on a nifty feed from Elena Strom. Goalie Cerrena Vera came up with some big saves for the victors while Synclaire Hamilton, Kailey Richardson, and Jenna Wondka each had a stellar game for the Firebirds.
The victory over the Tidal Waves was closer than the final score would indicate. The game was tied 1-1 in the first half as the Firebirds allowed only their third goal of the season. Ashley Campbell broke the tie when she scored late in the half following a shot by Strom. Vera again came up big in goal for Firebirds as Rodan and Strom added goals late in the second half to clinch the win. Rodan's goal was a great individual effort while Strom was able to cash in after a Wondka pass. Tafolla had scored the Firebirds' first goal back in the opening half of play. Amy de Landa and Kayla Gladish played well for the winners while Samantha Stephens and Eva Liu were strong in defense to shut-out the Tidal Waves over the second half. Firebirds now move on to two post season tournaments week-ends of Nov. 10-11 and 17-18.
Saturday, Oct. 20, saw Los Tigres Azules of the Under-16 League drop their third game of the season to the second-place Cyclones, 2-0. Nicole Torres and Kara Jeffrey both took good shots on goal, but just missed. Ladin Awad and Neha Subramanyam each had a solid game on defense for Azules.
