Girls' Volleyball Fest
Submitted By Elizabeth Silva
On Saturday, October 13th, the Second Annual Middle School Girls' Volleyball Fest was held at James Logan High School in Union City. A total of ten middle school and junior high school (JHS) aged girls' teams participated in the all-day competition. Logan's Head Volleyball Coach, Danielle Anderson, served as the Tournament Director.
Of the competing teams, Holy Spirit CYO (Catholic Youth Organization) eighth grade won the Gold Division in three games versus Alvarado Middle School, and Horner JHS was victorious in three games versus Holy Spirit CYO seventh grade.
The following teams competed in the tournament: from Union City, Alvarado and Barnard-White Middle Schools; Fremont, Horner JHS (two teams), Hopkins JHS (two teams) and Thornton JHS; Newark, Newark JHS; and CYO Holy Spirit (two teams), seventh grade and eighth grade.
The event provided an opportunity for middle school and junior high school girls who share a love of volleyball to sharpen their skills and interact. Logan's Junior Varsity and Varsity players gained experience running a tournament and helped with many behind-the-scenes functions. They also handled much of the refereeing and score table responsibilities. Volleyball Boosters from Logan High coordinated a snack bar. Thanks to Chevy's, Jamba Juice and Starbucks, all from Union Landing, and Rose Garden for their generous support.
