Mayhem, Newark Soccer League Under-13 Girls
Submitted By Danielle Viera
Newark Mayhem was in Redwood City during the weekend of September 29-30 at the Juventus Fall Classic. They were in a tournament with four brackets which meant they had to win their bracket to move on to the semi-finals. Mayhem was the only District 3 team in the tournament as all the other teams were from District 2.
Mayhem opened the tournament with a 1-0 victory over Orchard Valley Blizzard. It was a tough game but a well deserved victory. The second game was against MC Strikers, and was another hard fought match with Mayhem's girls again coming out on top. This time with a 4-1 victory. The Newark team ended up finishing first in their bracket and moved on to the semi-finals against De Anza Stealth.
The girls played hard and Mayhem's goalie played great between the uprights, however they fell 1-0 to the Stealth. Playing on an artificial surface over the weekend caused a few Mayhem players to suffer hamstring and calf injuries which limited their offensive attack. Thus, Mayhem found themselves in the consolation game against Juventus Blaze, the host team. Blaze had on their roster a player who used to play for Mayhem but had to leave the team because her family moved to Redwood City. Mayhem's players were excited to play against their former teammate and ready to prove themselves. Mayhem came out fast and played hard with a 2-0 victory which earned them the Bronze medal.
Parents and coaches are proud of the way Mayhem's girls performed, and while they did not win Gold, they were able to rise together as a team and come out with a medal. The team received some great compliments on both their play and the positive attitude shown by players, parents and coaches.
