Halloween Family Fun at Ardenwood Historic Farm

Submitted By Terrie Rowe

If the autumn chill in the air hasn't put you in the mood for Halloween yet, a trip to Ardenwood Historic Farm in Fremont is just the ticket.

Pumpkin Patch
Still need to buy your pumpkin? Head on over to Joe Perry's Pumpkin Patch and while you're there, pick up some healthy organic fruits and vegetables at the produce stand. The Pumpkin Patch is open Monday through Friday, 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday and Sundays from 9:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. For more information, call (510) 790-2659.

Corn Maze
While you're there, get lost for a while in the Corn Maze - a twisty labyrinth carved into five acres of corn. The Corn Maze is open daily from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. (4 p.m. on Halloween). A stroll through the maze costs $7 for adults and $5 for children. If just getting lost in the maze isn't scary enough, make sure to visit during the special Halloween tours when things take a decidedly spooky turn. You'll never know who - or what - you'll meet as you navigate through the stalks. Haunted Halloween tours are held after 6:30 on Oct. 26-27 and 30. Prices for these special tours are $8 for adults and $6 for children. For more information, call (510) 205-8314.

Ghost Train
Chug through spooky woods and gloomy fields on the Halloween Ghost Train. Just a little bit scary, the Ghost Train is intended for families with pre-teen children. The Halloween Train runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights through Oct. 28, from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. (9 p.m. on Sundays). Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for children (3 through 12 years). Tickets may be purchased in advance at the Book End, 5678 Thornton Avenue in Newark, or at the park upon arrival. For more information, call (877) 417-7277.

The Ghost Train is a narrow gauge train operated in association with the East Bay Regional Park District by SPCRR, the non-profit Society for the Preservation of Carter Railroad Resources, a railroad museum located in the park.

Candlelight House Tours
Imagine walking through an old house in the dark, your way guided only by flickering candlelight. Sound intriguing? Take a Fall Candlelight Tour of the 150-year-old Patterson House. Tours are Oct. 26-28 (Friday-Sunday) at 7 p.m., 7:30 p.m., 8 p.m., and 8:30 p.m., and cost $8. This tour is not recommended for young children. Reservations are required. Call (510) 791-4196.
