Debby De Angelis Selected NAIA Region 2 Athletic Director of Year

Submitted By Barry Zepel

Debby De Angelis, director of athletics for California State University, East Bay for the past six years, has been selected as "Region 2 Athletic Director of the Year" for 2006-07 by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.

The region includes all NAIA member universities and colleges from California and Arizona. De Angelis will be presented with the award at the NAIA national convention in Louisville, Kentucky in April of 2008.

She was selected by the NAIA after being nominated for the honor by the athletic body's regional management council, which is made up of two university presidents, two conference commissioners, and three athletic directors.

De Angelis has led the CSUEB athletic program-made up of six men's teams and nine women's teams-since July of 2001. "This is a fabulous distinction for Debby," said Jodi Servatius, Interim Dean of CSUEB's College of Education and Allied Studies, of which the athletic program is a part. "In being recognized as our region's Athletic Director of the Year, she brings honor to the whole institution."

In addition to her responsibilities for the university, De Angelis also serves as vice president of the California Pacific Conference, the NAIA league in which Cal State East Bay competes in men's and women's basketball, golf, and cross country.

Other CSUEB athletic squads compete as NCAA Division III independents, including the Pioneers' women's volleyball, men's baseball, and women's and men's soccer teams. In providing leadership for those sports, De Angelis also serves as vice president of the Association of Division III Independents, which she helped form in 2004.

Within the NAIA, she is vice chair of the Region 2 management council, an at-large member of the National Council of Collegiate Administrators, the Cal Pac Conference liaison for women's basketball, and served as tournament director of the Cal Pac Conference Men's and Women's Basketball Championships the past three years. Last year she was elected by the NAIA Council of President's to serve on the Gender Equity Committee. She also chaired the conference's recent search for a new commissioner. De Angelis also serves on a number of Cal State East Bay academic and administrative committees.

For athletics on the world stage, De Angelis has served in a leadership role for FISA, the international rowing federation, since the 1970s, and has been a United States delegate to the FISA Congress 12 times. She is a member of the FISA Youth Commission with responsibility for development of international rowing for competitors 23 years of age and younger.

De Angelis recently observed new Olympic facilities built in China as a representative of FISA and the United States. Prior to coming to Cal State East Bay, De Angelis was associate athletic director for internal operations at Towson University in Maryland for five years. She resides in Hayward.
