Betsy Gravett Tennis Tournament
By Karthik Raman
In 1994, a quiet yet enthusiastic tennis pro, Betsy Gravett, was diagnosed with a malicious brain tumor. Doctors gave her a year to live. However, because of advances in cancer research, various treatments were possible to remove the tumor. It was determined that a form of radiation therapy called shaped beam surgery was the best option and she responded well to the treatment. Thirteen years later, Betsy is alive and in good health. She knows that there are others who are desperately struggling against cancer, and she wants to give something back to the community that helped her.
In 1997, the first Betsy Gravett Women's Doubles Tennis Tournament was held by Betsy and her friends. This tournament raised $6,000. Since then, nearly $300,000 has been collected resulting in 65 grants (13 grants last year). This year, the goal is to raise $50,000. The event has expanded from a women's doubles tournament to include a men's doubles competition as well. "It's both fun and competitive, but everyone remembers it's for a great cause," says Betsy.
Everyone is invited to participate in the 11th annual Betsy Gravett Tennis Tournament September 15 and 16. Tournament entry includes a two match guarantee, a player gift with tournament logo, breakfast, lunch, dinner, a live band, and more, all for the entry fee of $75. Raffle prizes and a silent auction will add to the fun. Proceeds will be donated to cancer patients with financial hardship and cancer research.
Register with a partner or just by yourself; the foundation will pair you with a partner if necessary. Meals are included, with vegetarian options. The tournament includes skill levels 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, and 4.5. There is no limit as to how many people can sign up. For those who do not wish to play tennis, dinner at Mission Hills on the 16th is only $20. Tournament sign-ups will end Friday, September 7th. Make checks payable to: The Betsy Gravett Cancer Foundation.
