Newark neighbor knows how to throw a party

Dear Dreyer's Ice Cream,

Last year, my wife Mary submitted an essay and was a winner in your Neighborhood Block Party contest which was a resounding success. We had moved into our neighborhood only a few months prior to receiving the ice cream party and as such, have created the beginnings of a neighborhood tradition. We met nearly all of our new neighbors and think it would be simply fantastic to continue the tradition by winning it for the second year in a row.

One of the most frequent comments we heard during the first party was "we should do this type of thing more often". They thought it was a really nice that Dreyer's would sponsor such an event. Once removed from all of the things in life that keep us so busy, we've found that many of our neighbors are quite friendly and we've even done other family events after forging new friendships. From school field trips, a New Years Eve Party, and even a group outing at a corn maize not far from here, we've become very involved in our new neighborhood. We'd love the opportunity to keep up the community spirit with the help of Dreyer's Ice Cream.

Sincerely,
Steve Shambaugh

For the third consecutive year, Dreyer's invited ice cream lovers nationwide to break the ice with new and long-time neighbors by nominating their blocks for old-fashioned ice cream socials. More than 17,000 ice cream lovers, from Hawaii to Maine and everywhere in between, submitted their stories to "Salute" their neighborhood with a free ice cream block party. By the end of Summer 2007, Dreyer's will have thrown a total of 4,500 ice cream block parties nationwide.

Each winning neighborhood will receive a doorstep delivery of Dreyer's Slow Churned Light ice cream (enough for up to 100 partygoers) and all the fixings (scoops, tablecloths, nametags, disposable camera, napkins and so on) for a fun, memorable and easy-to-organize party.

"Dreyer's has touched close to 300,000 neighbors through our Slow Churned Neighborhood Salute block party program and we're thrilled to bring the same energy to communities this year," said John Harrison, Official Taster for Dreyer's Ice Cream. "These ice cream block parties are the perfect starting point for building stronger relationships with the people right outside your doorstep and we have been delighted to learn that winning neighborhoods from years past continue to build on these connections."
