La Boheme - Opera in Fremont
By Mona Shah
La Boheme, considered one of the most popular operas worldwide, will be presented at the Smith Center, Ohlone College for an evening performance on Friday, August 24 and a matinee on Sunday, August 26. The opera, with music by Giacomo Puccini, is based on Murger's Scenes de la Vie de Boh?me. This was Puccini's fourth opera and the second of his four most mature works. The Fremont Opera in its premiere event will present a semi-staged version in which principal singers will have staged movement and action enhanced by lighting. "Supertitles" in English will be projected above the stage during the performance.
The plot of La Boh?me centers on a community of artists in Paris; the romantic relationship of poet Rodolfo and grisette Mimi in particular. Like the parallel relationship of Rodolfo's roommate Marcello and the beautiful Musetta, Mimi and Rodolfo's love is not without conflict. At the end of the opera, however, they are united tragically as Mimi returns to the garret and dies there, surrounded by her friends.
