Volunteerism lauded
I look forward to and appreciate your weekly column, but this time, I had such an immediate and positive reaction to your message in the July 3-9, 2007 issue, that for the first time ever, I felt moved to respond to an editorial.
I agree with your statement that "...the heart of humanity lies...beyond government to those who give through service clubs, volunteer organizations and non profits."
As chairman of communications, which entails our volunteerism for the California Retired Teachers' Association, Division 91 (covering Fremont, Union City and Newark), I'm proud to report that our members gave over 18,745 hours of their time, energy and concern to so many people and causes in need last year.
Teachers, by nature are a giving, caring segment of humanity. Retiring hasn't slowed them down, as witnessed by all the things they give and do and the many lives they touch. They give proof to your idea of how "...nobility rises above pettiness and greed."
