Optimist Club hosts Ice Cream Social

Submitted By : Marla Blowers

Local cancer patients and their families have a friend in the Newark Optimist Club. Optimist volunteers will hold a community-wide Ice Cream Social on Sunday, July 29, in their on-going effort to aid kids diagnosed with cancer. This event is part of the Optimist International Foundation's Childhood Cancer Campaign.

This will be the 3rd Annual Ice Cream Social to benefit children with cancer. Funds raised last year enabled Optimists to purchase digital cameras, a wagon, and 200 plush toys for Lucile Packard Children's Hospital in Palo Alto. Assistance was given to provide emergency housing for a single mom whose child was critically ill at Lucile Packard. A Newark boy was given a $200 gift card to Toys R Us during his cancer treatment. Funds were also sent to the Optimist International Foundation Childhood Cancer Campaign which, in turn, has granted Johns Hopkins University Medical Center Oncology Department $700,000. Eventually the grant will total $920,000. Research is under way to cure leukemia in children through monies that, joined with other Optimists across the world, will make the world a better place for children everywhere.

The event will take place at the Newark Pavilion, 6430 Thornton Ave. in Newark, 12 - 4 p.m. Admission at the door: $10 adults, $5 children age 12 and under, and $25 for a family of 2 adults and 1 or more children. Admission will include an ice cream sundae or root beer float, live entertainment, a raffle ticket, bottled water or coffee. There will be activities and bags of school supplies for children, and a multi-media presentation on Optimist International. The raffle will include gift baskets for adults and children, beautiful quilts, bicycles with helmets, hotel and restaurant gift cards and certificates for other services in the Tri-Cities area.

Newark Police Explorers will be on hand to finger print kids and promote the DARE and GREAT Programs; the Newark Fire Department will conduct fire safety classes in their fire prevention trailer. Attendees will be served by a host of local celebrity scoopers and enjoy Illusionist Ryan Adler and barbershop music provided by the Harmony Fusion, a women's Sweet Adeline's group, and dancers from the Joanne Brown School of Dance. Bob Marshall will be the MC for the afternoon.

The Newark Optimists are a part of Optimist International, one of the world's largest civic service organizations. With 114,000 members in 3,500 clubs, Optimists are known for "Bringing out the Best in Kids." The organization has declared the Childhood Cancer Campaign (CCC) as their primary thrust in their attempt to "rid the world of childhood cancer."

Please join us in this exciting effort by attending the Ice Cream Social on July 29th. For more information about the CCC or about Optimist International, please contact Marla, CCC Chair, (510) 793-1498.Tickets will be sold at the door or by calling Marla for presale tickets.
