Cudas win sixty third consecutive dual meet

By Praveena Raman

On Saturday June 21 two East Bay Swim League (EBSL) titans, Fremont's Mission Valley Barracudas (Cudas), Southern Division Champions, faced off against San Leandro's Drowning Darryls, the Northern Division Champions, in a hair-raising, nail-biting meet. The Cudas won by a narrow margin with a score of 533:501 giving them their 63 consecutive dual meet win since 1998.

These two teams who have been friendly rivals for more than ten years, started the meet at 8 a.m. to loud cheering and high excitement. The Drowning Darryls captured the opening contests securing first places in the Medley Relay right off the bat but the Cudas fiercely came back and snatched the lead only to be again overpowered for a short while in the over 13 age groups. The entire morning was punctuated with extremely close races determined by the final touch of the swimmers fingers to the wall; timing between the first and second places were often only separated by a millisecond.

Both teams took turns in the lead until the final free relay races where the Cudas captured all but one first place. It was heartening to see the camaraderie and sportsmanship exhibited by both team and all the parents. "I was proud of the swimmers who cheered for each other and shook an opponent's hand and our parents who cheered for both San Leandro and Mission Valley teams" says Jane Conn, President of the Mission Valley Swim Team. Cuda parents who were hosting the Drowning Darryls made the event even more special by having a Hawaiian theme and dishing up mouth-watering healthy food in grass hula skirts the entire evening.

The following Cuda swimmers placed first in their event in this close swim meet:
Freestyle: Girls: Juliana McCuaig (9-10), Claire McLaggan (11-12), Charlotte Miller (13-14); Boys: Misha Galant (9-10), Dylan Jeffery (11-12), Kekoa Wu (13-14).
