Newark municipal election notice

The term of office for Mayor is two years; City Council members serve a four year term. Any resident of the city who is at least 18 years old and a registered voter living in Newark is eligible to run for Mayor or for the City Council.

The nomination period for the November 6 Municipal Election begins Monday, July 16 and ends on August 10, 2007. Nomination papers may be picked up in the City Clerk's Office, during regular business hours 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, 37101 Newark Boulevard, 5th Floor. Should an incumbent not seek re-election, the nomination period for that specific seat will extend to August 15, 2007.

Candidates for elective office must be a resident of Newark, 18 years or age or older and registered to vote in Newark at the time nomination papers are issued. Candidates for office must submit nomination papers that contain the signatures of at least 20 registered voters of the City of Newark.

In order to vote in the municipal election, you must be a citizen of the United States, a resident of Newark, and 18 years of age or older as of the day of election. You must be registered at least 15 days prior to the election. Registration forms are available at City Hall and the Post Office.
