Theatre - Disney's High School Musical

Submitted By Belinda Maloney

"School" is in session at Stage 1 Children's Theatre! "Disney's High School Musical" is the stage version of the wildly popular TV flick that has consumed young and old alike since it came out early in 2006. Stage 1 Children's Theatre is honored to have secured the first performing rights in the region.

It's all about love, school, cell phones, cliques and fashion...yes, it's about High School! But mostly it's about doing what your heart tells you to do despite what the rest of the world expects of you.

High School tells the story of Troy Bolton (Jimmy Carter), the High School basketball team captain, and Gabriella Montez (Christi Wallace), a shy transfer student who excels in academics. By chance, both students discover a hidden passion for singing, and subsequently must decide if lead roles in a High School show are worth the scrutiny teens receive from their friends and two scheming classmates, siblings Sharpay (Kimberly Chatterjee), and Ryan (Matthew Horry). But it's not just Troy and Gabriella who struggle with dreams outside their comfort zones. Throughout the show, multiple characters confess hidden hobbies that defy their own cliques that threaten East High's social order.

These High School students are struggling with issues of popularity, first love, balancing education with extra curricular activities and the value of friends and family. When their world is mixed with positive themes such as the importance of expressing and believing in yourself and following your dreams, what you get is this new family-friendly musical that's sure to be enjoyed by audiences of all ages.

Director Belinda Maloney promises an exciting, eye-pleasing, dance in your seat, sing-a-long kind of production great for the whole family.
