Indian Ocean Concert
By Mona Shah
Indian Ocean band music stems from a rich cultural Indian background combining elements of Bengali sangeet, jazz improvisation, rock-laden rhythmic patterns, Hindustani classical music, and a melodic soul that is immediately recognizable. Their music is said to combine the intensity of rock with the depths of Indian classical music, sometimes bursting into spontaneous jams. The concert stage is filled with joyous enthusiasm as Indian Ocean sounds reflect a genuine love of their creations; truly an electrifying stage presence and phenomenal experience. Performances around the world including concerts in Edinburgh, Chicago and Tokyo have received critical acclaim.
Formed in 1990, the present line-up includes Sushmit Sen on acoustic guitars, Rahul Ram on bass and vocals, Asheem Chakravarty on tabla (a percussion instrument of two distinct drums), percussions and vocals, and Amit Kilam on drums and flute. Following a "demo tape" in 1991, Indian Ocean released 'Desert Rain' in 1997 noted as the first live album ever to be released by an Indian band. The group now with five best-selling albums has appeared in numerous concerts around the world.
A local audience will be treated to a performance by this unique, contemporary band on Saturday, July 14. This is an opportunity to experience the best of Indian fusion music and support the Association for India's Development (AID). All the proceeds of the concert will be used to support AID projects to ensure government transparency and eliminate corruption. The powerful concept of the people's right to know about government spending is being sought through the Right to Information (RTI) project. This helps to fulfill one of the most basic principals of a democracy...knowledgeable discussion.
