Candle Lighters install officers and award Ghost House funds

The Candle Lighters, a non-profit organization of over 100 women from the Ti-Cities area is celebrating our 38th year of community service. Our annual Ghost House at the Chadbourne Carriage House Park has raised over 1.5 million dollars for Fremont, Newark and Union City since 1969. These funds have been awarded to locally-based non-profit organizations, as well as the cities of Fremont, Newark and Union and City, local school systems and city services departments.
The Candle Lighters are pleased to announce the recipients of funds from our successful Ghost House last October.
The City of Fremont: $15,000 for a 5 year total of $75,000 toward the new swim park. HERS Breast Cancer Foundation: $4,367.80 Child Abuse Prevention Agency: $3,290.78 Pacific Locomotive Association: $4,148.72 Friends of Ash Street Community Enrichment: $1,583.35 City of Fremont, Senior Center: $3,699.00 Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum: $6,976.56 Friends of Children with Special Needs: $6,267.11
2007 Proposals and order of funding:
1. City of Fremont Fire Department City of Fremont Fire Department has requested $7, 505.00 to purchase advanced rescue equipment. These tools will allow for the search and assist in the rescue of victims trapped n a structural collapse incident.
2. League of Volunteers-LOV The League of Volunteers has asked for $3,416.90 to purchase 2 Automatic External Defibrillators to be used at the league's two sites. With the large group of seniors who use the programs offered, they would like this equipment to help in a crisis to help save a life while waiting for 911 to arrive.
3. Life ElerCare, inc. LIFE EldeCare, Inc needs $8,480 to purchase a digital copier. The copier is needed to make copies for mailings, menus, volunteer manuals and every day business use.
4. Washington Hospital Health Care Foundation The Washington Hospital Health Care Foundation has requested $3,914.34 to purchase TVs with DVD & VHS, baby scales, car seats and various breast feeding information in books and DVDs. The items are used to support and encourage the healthful practice of breast feeding.
5. Alameda County Library Foundation An Early Literacy Station to be used at the Newark Branch Library has been requested by the Alameda County Library Foundation. The equipment, at a cost of $2,440.00 is to be used by children aged 2-8.
6. Ohlone College Music and Theater Department Ohlone College Music and Theater Department would like to purchase 2 electronic keyboards with necessary equipment for $6,481.43. The equipment would be used to expand the musical theater department and as part of the new Commercial Music Certificate program and throughout the studio recording/engineering curriculum.
7. Tri-City Volunteers Tri-City has requested $24,350.00 for the purchase of a walk-in freezer and walk-in cooler. These items would replace old equipment.
8. Tri-City Animal Shelter The proposal for Tri-City Animal Shelter is for $19,367.00 to purchase an "Animal Disaster" response trailer. The trailer would allow them to provide an a safe and healthy means of responding to various locations in the event of a disaster. It would benefit the community and animals by assisting in disaster relief when needed for recovering lost and injured animals.
