2007 World Deaf Basketball Championships

In the second World Deaf Basketball Championships (WDBC) now being played in Guangzhou, China, the USA Women's Team at press time, had a record of 2-0 in first round pool play. They opened with a 91-69, victory over host China. Although they struggled in the first half and led by only nine points through much of the half, they found their rhythm near the end of the half to take a 42-26 half-time lead. The team was led by Shari Bailey, MVP of the first WDBC played in Greece, who had 25 points and 14 rebounds. Jennifer Decuir added 20 points and a team high 5 assists. Assistant Coach, Barbara Hyde of CSD Fremont, who was only supposed to play in an emergency such as an injury or foul trouble to other players, did play 11 minutes and scored 6 points.
In the second game, Team USA routed Japan 118-31. Next up and final game of first round pool play was undefeated Sweden. Both teams are guaranteed a spot in the four team play-offs this coming weekend. Semi-final winners will meet for first place and losers will play for third place. Other semi-finalists are likely to be Greece, Lithuania or Ukraine.
USA Men's Team started out 1-1 in pool play as they won over India by forfeit, then lost a close game to Italy, 69-68. At press time, they still had a game with Ukraine to play in the first round. They will have to win that game in order to advance to the playoff round.
Women's Championship game will be broadcast free, via live video internet at midnight, this Saturday night PDT, June 30. The Men's Championship game will follow at 2 a.m. PDT, June 30. The website for the internet is www.wdbc2007.org .
