Hayward welcomes summer with traditional street parties

If you are in Hayward on the third Thursday during summer months, get ready to have fun and party! As bay breezes of summer evenings begin to cool things down, Hayward's historic downtown streets prepare to heat up with booths, exhibits, food vendors and lots of entertainment.

These street parties are now in their eighth year. The Hayward Chamber of Commerce joins with the city of Hayward and the Downtown Business Improvement Area merchants to throw a grand party to celebrate the city, its businesses, people...and just have fun! Festivities are suitable for the whole family; bring the kids, there will be plenty to entertain them. Kids will want to visit face-painting booths, games, watch crazy clowns and enjoy many other enticing activities.

Don't worry about hunger pangs at this party. Local restaurants along B Street will satisfy any appetite and preference. Want variety? From Buffalo Bill's Brew Pub, B Street Chinese Restaurant, The Bistro, Shark Shack and The Medicine Chest Soda Fountain invite revelers inside while outside, venders will offer hot dogs, Kettle Korn and much more.

Music will fill the air on these special Thursday evenings as the B Street All Stars, Bay Area Society Caravan of All Stars, The Diehards and The New Beat take turns sending great vibes to the crowds. Newman Park will again settle the soul with Russell City blues (bring a lawn chair to be comfortable). Each month will feature a different style of music in the beer, wine and soda garden next to the Bank of the West.

Main Street, from "A" to "C" will be lined with classic and muscle streetrods and hotrods. For an automotive review with few parallels, this is the place to stroll down memory lane or admire the style and glamour of gleaming chrome, polished leather and paint jobs that reflect the epitome of care and imagination.

Festivities kick off at 5:30 p.m. and run through 8:30 p.m. Street barricades will block traffic on B Street between Foothill and Mission boulevards and also on Main Street between A and C streets.

This summer's dates are June 21; July 19; August 16 and September 20. For more information, visit
