'La Blooming Affaire' pays tribute to Chabot College alumni
Submitted By Patricia Russell
Unique table-setting designs by both professional designers and community members, floral demonstrations by a world-renowned designer, and a special tribute to two community leaders were the highlights of Chabot College Foundation's "La Blooming Affaire: Tour of Tables and Explosion of Design," held on Friday, June 8 and Saturday, June 9. The event took place in the beautiful Hayward City Hall Rotunda, elegantly decorated with a French theme in a benefit for the Interior Design Department of Chabot College.
Two Chabot College alumni were honored as leaders in the local community. Richard Valle currently sits on the City Council for Union City. This Vietnam veteran attended Chabot College in the 1970's with help from the G.I. Bill and later graduated from California State University, Hayward, with a BA in Sociology and a MA in Public Administration. He went on to establish Tri-CED Community Recycling, now California's largest non-profit recycling operation. Tri-CED has entered into a joint venture with Chabot College to build a 10,000 square foot Science and Education center at its site in Union City.
The event also celebrated the achievements and contributions of Paul Russo, another longtime philanthropist in the region who attended Chabot College and later became an employee of the college. Russo founded the first information referral office at Chabot College and eventually worked for the financial aid office. He has served on the boards of the Family Services Agency of the East Bay, the Associated Community Action Program, Davis Street Community Center, Uni-Parent Program, the Economic Development Program of Alameda County, ExOffender Program of Hayward, Emergency Shelter Program, Hayward Chamber of Commerce and St. Rose Hospital.
