Passport to a Multicultural Magical Adventure
By Arathi Satish
Adventure and magic is always available at local libraries, but once a year, Fremont's Main Library adds an extra pinch of enchantment to the library realm. On Friday, June 8, The Alameda County Library Foundation's Passport to Adventure gala is prepared to provide guests with a very special passport for a dazzling and tantalizing trek to faraway places...and no visa stamp is required. An amazing evening of multicultural magic will celebrate Alameda County's rich ethnic and cultural diversity.
The quiet atmosphere of Fremont's Main Library will be transformed. Sumptuous food stations, exotic cultural art and entertainment will fill the corridors. Performances are scheduled by Eden Obo Taiko Drummers, Magical Mat, Hula `Ohana O Puananikauisawekiu, Prabath Academy for Music and Performing Arts and Fortune Teller Ming. Travel guests will not only have a great opportunity to enjoy their multicultural trip, but help contribute to Alameda County Library programs and services at Albany, Castro Valley, Dublin, Fremont, Newark, San Lorenzo and Union City branch libraries.
Evening festivities will also feature a silent and live auction; last year's event raised $10,000 through these auctions. This year, auction items include, a Hawaiian getaway, an Electric Synergy bike, a Southern California weekend bonanza, dazzling Vegas adventure, dinner at the Fremont Fire Station, Bay Area sporting event tickets and much more. Proceeds will go toward additional books and materials in foreign languages, children's services, adult programs, literacy projects, cultural events and other needed projects.
Tiona Smith, Development Director, Alameda County Library Foundation (ACLF) said that the last year's adventure was a smashing success that raised over $33,000. Tiona noted, "With this event, guests will experience an exciting mystical adventure while raising funds for much needed materials and programs. Currently ACLF sponsors several key library programs such as the, 'Summer Reading Game' for children and teens, which encourages good reading habits over simmer break. The Foundation regularly supports children's and family programs, including story times for toddlers, author nights and cultural programs for families".
NUMMI, this year's Presenting Sponsor is joined by other sponsors including Fremont Bank, Cisco Systems, Inc., NBC11, Kaiser Permanente, Salas O'Brien Engineering Inc., Cargill Salt, Oakland Athletics, Jean Hofacket, Heartwood Communities Inc., and Dr. Ted and Virginia Woy.
Tickets are $100 per person ($70 of ticket is tax-deductible) and blocks of 12 tickets are available for $1000. For further information regarding tickets, sponsorship and volunteer information, contact ACLF Development Director, Tiona Smith at (510) 745-1542 or email to email@example.com.
