The Oakland Raiders will return to the green Thursday, June 14, 2007, at 11 a.m. to raise money for Special Olympics Northern California as part of the 2nd Annual Raiders Golf Classic at Castlewood Country Club in Pleasanton. More than 70 Oakland Raiders players, legends, Raiderettes and coaches will play with participating golfers and celebrate the achievements of local Special Olympics athletes. The event raised more than $175,000 in 2006 and proceeds from this year's event will help support the Special Olympics Northern California Summer Games on June 8-10, 2007, for more than 1,000 athletes at UC Berkeley.
"The Raiders Golf Classic is a great collaboration between two incredible organizations," said Jill Osur, Sr. Vice President of Special Olympics Northern California. "This event is a great platform to showcase the incredible skills of athletes with developmental disabilities and for the community to see the wonderful commitment the entire Raiders organization has made to help raise money and awareness for Special Olympics."
This year's event, presented by Preferred Financial, will be packed with giveaways and contests on almost every hole, such as autographed footballs, mini helmets, cleats, calendars along with nine on-course contests.
"We are very pleased to partner with Special Olympics for the second year in a row," said Artie Gigantino, senior adminstrator for the Oakland Raiders. "Our players have been involved for many years with this great organization and we look forward to building this long-term partnership with Special Olympics and helping them reach more athletes with developmental disabilities."
The proceeds from the event will help underwrite the costs of the Special Olympics Northern California Summer Games, which are being held June 8-10, 2007 at UC Berkeley. More than 1,000 Special Olympics athletes from throughout Northern California will be descending on to the Cal campus to compete for gold in Aquatics, Track & Field, Bocce, Tennis and Volleyball.
Preceding the two-day competition there will be an Opening Ceremonies, presented by AT&T, on 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 8, and hosted by Star 101.3. The Opening Ceremonies will feature live performances from "American Idol's" Katharine McPhee and world-renowned performance artist David Garibaldi. To get tickets to this free event, visit the Special Olympics Northern California website, http://www.sonc.org or participating Bay Area AT&T stores.
