Lu'au benefits Boy Scouts at California School for the Blind
When the Union City Lions Club heard about the Boy Scout program at the California School for the Blind in Fremont, they knew they had to help. "The primary mission of Lions Clubs around the world has to do with improving vision and improving the quality of life of the visually-impaired. When we found out about this special scout troop serving the visually-impaired right in our own backyard," said Helen Kennedy of the Lions Club "deciding to help them was a no-brainer."
The Boy Scout program serves about 45 visually-impaired, deaf and blind, and multi-challenged boys and girls and enables them to participate in confidence-building activities such as camping, kayaking, and adaptive sports. It also teaches the kids skills like orienteering, swimming, and how to stay safe in different environments.
Many of the participants in the scout program and their families have very limited resources and cannot fund the activities themselves. The program is not a part of the normal school curriculum, and government funding is not available for it.
The Union City Lions Club found out about the program from scout leader Jeanette Weaver and every two years, the club sponsors a lu'au to raise money for a group, or an individual in need. The club's board of directors decided they would sponsor a luau for the scout program to help them defray the cost of their activities.
The lu'au for the special scouts will take place Saturday, June 2 from 6 - 10 p.m. at Our Lady of Rosary Church Hall in Union City. The luau promises to be a fun-filled evening of island music and dance and fabulous Hawaiian cuisine. The Kawailehua Hula Ohana Polynesian Dance Revue will provide the entertainment. Partygoers will dance to music by the Island Wave Band. There will also be raffles and prizes. Tickets are $30 for adults and $15 for children 7 and under.
The event is co-sponsored by the Union City Lioness and Leos organizations and the Kawailehua Hula Ohana. For tickets or more information, please call (510) 386-8232 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
