Union City's own Searles Elementary School students were among those honored last week in San Francisco as winners in the Stock Market Game, a nationwide educational program based on a simulation of the stock market. Teams of students from Vince Rosato's fifth-grade class finished First and Second in the Fall Competition, and First and Third in the Spring Competition. The students attended an awards ceremony on Wednesday, May 23, sponsored by the San Francisco Chronicle.
In the Stock Market Game, teams of fourth through twelfth-grade students hypothetically invest $100,000 in the stock market and chart their progress against other teams. Students learn about "ownership, companies, economic sectors, saving money, capitalism in general, the impact of world events on markets, and various other real life and financial literacy skills," Mr. Rosato said.
The game is sponsored by investment firm, Merrill Lynch.
