Seussical the Musical
By Mona Shah
Irvington Conservatory Theatre (ICT) invites you to Dr. Seuss' world of "Seussical the Musical", at Valhalla Theatre.
Leading the audience through the musical's twists and turns is none other than "Cat in the Hat," played delightfully by Kenta Naoi (sophomore). As the narrator, this puckish Cat drives the action of creating mischief at the snap of his fingers. Following this feline on his chaotic adventures is the wide-eyed JoJo, played by James Jones (freshman); at the will of the Cat, the boy becomes part of Dr. Seuss stories that he's only read of in books.
You say, "It's impossible" but JoJo doesn't think so. Seniors, Martin Kludjian Jr. and Lee Anne Denyer are responsible for bringing Horton the Elephant and Gertrude McFuzz to life and showing off their vocals to "Alone in the Universe" and "Notice Me, Horton".
Mayzie La Bird, played by Washington High School Senior, Michelle Foletta, commands the spotlight with her song and dance numbers "Amazing Mayzie" along with adding some extra spice to a number of scenes. Brett Jensen and Dulce Fernandez play the Mayor and Mrs. Mayor of the tiny town of Whoville. Parents will relate to the two characters and their struggle to uncover the instructions on how to raise their troublemaking child.
Artistic Director, Ms. Linda Jackson has transformed Valhalla Theatre to the amazing world of "Whoville", a re-creation of Dr. Seuss's universe that radiates wonder and whimsy while staying grounded.
Vocal Instructor Margee Wheeler is guiding the students of ICT to another incredible production. Irvington student Scenic Designers, Kai Chen, Katherine and Carissa Kuo are under the direction of Ohlone College Scenic Designer, Fred Alim as they bring the stage to life with dynamic colors.
The cast features 47 students from elementary to high schools in Fremont as well as Ohlone College. The actors drive the storyline as they morph into jungle creatures, tiny people, fish, and circus performers.
