"Images from Italy" Watercolors by Donna Sanson
Portola Art Gallery is proud to feature "Images from Italy," Watercolors by Donna Sanson. Colorful and full of life, the exhibit reflects Sanson's attraction to the charm and beauty of Italian hill towns and Renaissance cities. Inspired by two recent trips to Italy, Sanson fell in love with the extraordinary history, art, architecture, and people of this special country.
The first of her trips was a watercolor workshop to La Romita School of Art in Umbria, which provided an opportunity for daily visits to different hill towns throughout the region and a chance to sketch or paint on location amidst the peaceful sites and sounds of village life. In contrast, later visits to Rome and Florence provided Sanson with experiences and images unique to these two large ancient cities. Sanson says, "Some of the paintings in this series were completed on location, but many are a result of images I composed with my camera and later combined with sketches from my trips once I returned home. The photos and sketches serve as my starting points from which I simplify and exaggerate, until I'm satisfied with my impression of a scene. Painting on location is hard - time is of the essence and light is so fleeting - and I find my camera to be a perfect traveling companion."
Sanson is a resident of Fremont who received her formal art training from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas. She teaches watercolor to adults and is a founding member of Artists 7, a group of nine female artists established in 2000, who exhibit several times each year at galleries and museums around the Bay Area.
