Gene Leslie Lorenz

A man of true dignity, Gene passed away peacefully with his loving family at his side.

Born in Long Beach, CA and raised in Oakland, Ca, Gene attended Castlemont High School and later graduated from the Armstrong School of Business, in Berkeley, CA. He served our country for 4 years in the US Navy, from 1942 - 1946, stationed on Guam.

Gene retired from American Can Company, in Oakland, in 1984, after 33 years of service. Once retired, he worked at the family flower shop delivering flowers, known for his warm smile and gentle spirit. Gene was a friend to all and all who met him loved him.

Gene is remembered by his loving wife of 55 years, Shirley Alameda Lorenz, his children Mark Lorenz, Wendy Taylor, Randy Pinto, Dirk Lorenz and Paula Campbell. His eldest son Eric Lorenz, proceeded him in death in 2006. Gene's younger sister Jeanette "Mitzi" Elssaser resides in Colorado. A loving grandfather and "papa" to Eric Jr., Matthew, Robert, Justin, Tyler, Ashley, Frankie, Markie, Connor and Kieran; and Great Grandfather to Gracie, Andrew and Calvin. Gene is also remembered by his brothers-in-law Stanley Alameda, Melford Alameda, Irving Alameda and his sister-in-law Doris Crowe (Harold Alameda proceeded him in death in 1994).

Gene's family wishes to thank the compassionate doctors, nurses and respiratory therapist staff at Washington Hospital, in Fremont. To the end, Gene was a gentle and kind man with sparkling blue eyes and a brilliant attitude.

A memorial service honoring Gene and his wonderfully, full life will be at 4 p.m. on Monday, February 19 at Centerville Presbyterian Church, 4360 Central Ave. Fremont.

Those who wish may send donations to: Washington Hospital Healthcare Foundation, 2000 Mowry Ave., Fremont CA 94538 If you and your family would like the funds donated to a specific area of the hospital you may include that as well in your announcement. We will see that the funds are used as you designate.
