Chabot men' basketball team up against it

By Biff Jones

For the Chabot Gladiators Men's Basketball Team of Hayward, it was a critical win situation against the Foothill Owls last Wednesday, February 7, on the Los Altos Hills campus. Chabot needed to distance itself from Foothill in the Coast Conference North Division standings to improve its chances of being selected for the NorCal section of the California CC post season championship tournament

Led by 5'10" sophomore guard Ramon Green's ten points, the Gladiators took a 42-34 half-time lead as 5'9" sophomore guard Jenner Christiansen, hit a three point shot at the buzzer to end the first half. In the second half Chabot scored the first six points to jump out to a fourteen point advantage. This is when the tide turned and the Gladiators found a lid on the top of the bucket. Foothill responded with a thirteen point run to close the gap to 48-47, and now it was anybody's ball game. The remainder of the second half saw the Owls maintain a two to four point lead until Chabot was forced to foul to try to tie or go ahead. With the Foothill players converting at the "charity stripe" Chabot found themselves going down to a 73-66 defeat and in a three way tie with Foothill and Canada of Redwood City at 5-5 in conference play.

According to head coach, Dennis Aye, about the only good thing to come out of the defeat is to have another home game at the end of the regular season by hosting a playoff game to the post season tournament. To do this they will probably have to run the table and hope for a number fifteen or sixteen seed. They then would be home to the number seventeen or eighteen seed in the play in game. The problem with that, is the winners would then have to go on the road and play the number one or two seeds in the sixteen team NorCal section tournament.

The Gladiators were successful in the first step of running the table by hosting and defeating Skyline of San Bruno, 71-66 last Friday, the 9th. Next up is sister college Las Positas of Livermore, tomorrow night, the 14th at 7:30 p.m. on the Hayward campus, then the regular season finale, at Canada, this Friday the 16th at 7 p.m. Chabot will then learn its post season fate after the selection and seeding meeting this Sunday, February 18.

Meanwhile, Coast Conference North (CCN) first place Ohlone College Renegades of Fremont, continue to roll along as they hit the road and defeated Las Positas, 82-65 last Saturday night. The Renegades finish their regular home season, also tomorrow night, on the Fremont campus at 7 p.m. against Skyline, then finish the regular season at CCN second place City College of San Francisco, on Friday the 16th at 7 p.m. A two game sweep by Ohlone will probably mean a number one overall seed for head coach John Peterson's Renegades in the NorCal section, or a the very least, a number two seed. Either way they should be one of the four hosts in the four team regionals of the California CC NorCal tournament.
