Drop-In Day

As part of a state-wide effort by California Adult Schools to reach adults without a high school diploma, Fremont Adult School will participate in the 22nd Annual Drop-In Day for Dropouts, Thursday, January 18, from 8:30 a.m. until 9 p.m.

Throughout the day, individualized high school diploma counseling will be provided on a walk-in, no appointment basis. Drop-In Day participants will receive specific recommendations as to how they can best proceed to earn a diploma. Many persons without a diploma are not aware that job experience, previous high school work and certain other activities can count for diploma credit.

"The best solution to the dropout problem is to keep our children in school. However, many excellent programs don't take into account the tens of thousands of adults who never graduated and for whom staying in school or even returning to their old high schools are not options," said Melanie Wade, principal at Fremont Adult School.

"Drop-In Day is an outreach to these people. We want them to know about the literacy instruction and diploma program we have here at Fremont Adult School. It is free, scheduling is flexible, and students proceed at their own pace; there is no competitive pressure," concluded Wade.

While a major goal at Fremont Adult School is providing second opportunities for adults who were unable to complete traditional kindergarten through 12th grade education that is just part of the story. The school also offers programs for handicapped adults, senior citizens, parents, and adults who are new to the United States.

Recently added classes are available to high school seniors who have had difficulty with the California High School Exit Exam. Vocational training is another important element of the curriculum at Fremont Adult School.

The school also offers a wide variety of community education courses, including the ever-popular Traffic Safety course, at nominal fees.
