LOV’s annual free Thanksgiving mealby Charlotte Flowers-Weston
This year marks LOV’s (League of Volunteers) 18th year serving its Thanksgiving dinner for the needy. Over 4,000 meals will be prepared for “all those who would spend the day alone, or who do not have the resources, either money or shelter, to enjoy the traditional Thanksgiving meal and fellowship.”
Volunteer and donations are still needed, “We’re short of all kinds of things,” said Executive Director Shirley Sisk, “we need 250 turkeys but we only have 91 pledged so far.”
Although there appears to be a big shortage on items now, Sisk says she still expects over 4,000 people to attend. “A lot of people seemed to think that we weren’t going have the dinner this year because of some financial problems we were having. But we still plan to have the dinner and it always works out in the end.”
Some of the items that are greatly needed this year are: turkeys, hams, instant mashed potatoes, brown sugar, instant stuffing mix, milk, canned beans, corn, cranberry sauce, chicken broth, yams, roasting pans, paper cups and plates, and more. Volunteers are needed to cook turkey and hams, bake pies, decorate, set tables, clean up, and supervise crafts for children. Call (510) 793-5683 for more information or visit www.lov.org.
