Scream headed for Director’s Cup Tournamentby Paul Dunn
On the last Wednesday of the regular season, October 25, Scream met the Strikers to†determine who would finish 4th in the girl’s Under-14 division. The first 15 minutes saw both teams trying to find their form, with Scream's Melody Chen and Zarin Khan having good chances saved by the Strikers’ goalie. At the other end, Scream goalie, Sara Talooi, had to†be alert to stop a couple of long range shots from the Strikers' forwards. Scream coach, Ed Ohye, then decided to make some key substitutions and reorganize the team to try and get a goal. Erica Ohye came off the bench and immediately made a dramatic impact on offense in just 10 minutes of play. Just after entering the game, Ohye took the ball down the right wing and crossed the ball to Chen who slotted†the ball past the Strikers’ goal keeper for the game’s first goal. Five minutes later Chen returned the favor by passing the ball to Ohye as she slipped past her†defender and hit a hard shot into the net to make it 2-0. Chen soon got her second goal with a fine solo effort, and just before halftime, Maryam Khademi did well to beat her defender and shoot the ball†under the advancing goalie, only to have the goal disallowed on a†close offside call.
In the second half Scream focused on defending their lead. Christina Kim, Sarina Utamsing, Tina Kantaria, and Reema Agarwal all played well on defense, while Rachel Heng, Nicole Gronksi, Chrystalle Navarro, Rhian Dunn and Adrienne Fong fought to control the ball in†midfield and feed the ball to their forwards.† Megan Dunn and Selina†Mahesri both had good chances to score and in the final minutes of†the game, Chen crossed a perfect ball into the Strikers’ goal†area, only for the Strikers’ goalie to thwart Marissa Lee and then Dunn with close range, reflex saves to make the final score 3-0. Next up for Scream, the Director’s Cup Tournament, November 11-12. |
