Sideline Soccer: The Bog and Thor's Hammer vie and tie

by Praveena Raman

After a spectacular game on Thursday October 19, the Bog ended the match with a 2-2 tie against Thor's Hammer.  The tie was especially sweet for the Bog after a frustrating season of close games in the 2006 Fremont Youth Soccer League season.   The u14 boys from both teams were well matched in their skills and techniques keeping the spectators on the edge of their seats with nail biting tension filling the air.

The game started off with midfielders Scott Kavanagh, Brian Kao and Shreyas Bharadwaj ably keeping the ball in play and passing it deftly to the forwards and toward the goal.  However much to the chagrin of forwards Trevor Campbell, Karthik Raman and Akshay Nanavati, their attempts were foiled by the Thor's Hammer defense team.  Not to be outdone the Bog defense of Vishal Yadav, Daniel Xu, Vishal Bajpai, Shreyas Bharadwaj, Brian Kao and Robbie Anderson with sweeper Shaurin Desai and goalie Calvin Chiang blocked all goal attempts by Thor's Hammers.  The first half ended with neither team scoring.

The second half started off with Thor's Hammer scoring the first goal.  The Bog swiftly retaliated with forwards Karthik Raman and Calvin Chiang deftly passing the ball to each other, dodging the Thor defenders and speedily moving the ball toward the Thor goal.  With a strong kick Calvin sped the ball into the goal giving it a nice curve that foiled the defender's attempts to stop it, giving the Bog their first goal of the game.  With the game evened, both teams revved up their skills and speed to try and score more goals and emerge as the winner.  Soon after, the Bog scored their second goal (Calvin Chiang) taking the lead, which was short-lived as Thor's Hammers scored another goal and tied the game.

The two teams continued to play hard and soon Bog forward Denzil D'Sa took off running towards the goal.  Just as he was positioning himself to shoot the ball, there was an 'offside' call by the referee.  The game stopped with the players looking confused.  They soon found that unfortunately the referee's call was a mistake and the Bog got back the ball and continued.  However the moment for a goal was lost leaving the Bog team to wonder whether they would have scored.  Thor's Hammer continued to match the strength of the Bog but their next chance to score was lost with the ball soaring high above the goal.  The game ended with a score of 2-2.  Bog midfielders Daniel Yoon, Jeremy Pathmanaban and Ithalo Rodriguez played a strong game in the mid-field.
Coach Rob Kavanagh of The Bog commented with a smile "the boys played well and the team effort really showed with the strong passing in the second half".
