New boundaries for New Haven schoolsby Rick La Plante
With the closing of Cabello Elementary School at the end of the2006-07 school year and Barnard-White Middle School at the end of 2007-08, the New Haven Unified School District is in the process of redrawing boundaries that determine where students attend school. The goal is to balance enrollments as evenly as possible throughout the district.
Proposals for new boundaries will be presented to the board of education on Oct. 17. The district then will conduct a series of employee and community forums, similar to those held prior to the decision to close schools, before a recommendation is presented to the board on Nov. 14.
Forums will be at the Educational Services Center, 34200 Alvarado-Niles Road, as follows: 4:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 19 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 24 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 25 (Spanish) 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 1
The district also encourages written feedback via mail to 34200 Alvarado-Niles Road, Union City, 94587; e-mail to boundaries@nhusd.k12.ca.us; or fax (510) 475-3858. Deadline for written feedback is 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2.
Beginning Oct. 19, parents with questions about where their children will attend school under a particular proposal may call (510) 471-1100, ext. 2220. Please do not call before Oct. 19, as information on particular addresses will not be available until that date. |
