Scream tame Mighty Tigers, but just barely!by Paul Dunn
Wednesday evening, Oct. 11, saw Scream come up against the Mighty Tigers. Scream dominated the first half with wave after wave of attacks. Scream's midfield of Marissa Lee, Christina Kim, Crystalle Navarro, Rhian Dunn, Rachel Heng, Nicole Gronski, Tina Kantaria and Adrienne Fong, penned Mighty Tigers in their own half of the field, and it was only a matter of time before Scream scored. By the time the first half ended, Melody Chen had scored a natural hat trick (three consecutive goals by the same player) and Scream led 3-0.
Whatever Mighty Tigers' coach said at half time worked, as his side started the second half like a different team and fought aggressively for every ball. Both sides battled hard, but neither team could score until 10 minutes from full time when Mighty Tigers offense linked up to get the ball to Anasza Thompson. Without hesitating, she slotted the ball into the back of the net to cut the score to 3-1. Minutes later, Kelly Makela powered into Scream's penalty box and struck a hard shot which goalie, Sara Talooi at first saved, only to see Makela stab home the rebound. Now it was 3-2 and there was still over 5 minutes to play. Mighty Tigers continued to push forward to try to level the score and Scream had to play dogged defense. Finally, Scream broke out and won a corner kick. Scream's whole team pushed up for the corner and although Mighty Tigers defense initially cleared the ball, it fell to the feet of Scream's Sarina Utamsing. Then from more than 25 yards out, Utamsing sent the ball over the goalie and into the back of the net, making the final score 4-2. |
