Ghost House Goes to the Witches

by Julie Grabowski

Gather your potions, wands, and wizard hats and prepare for a dose of dark delights under the masters of "The Witching Academy." In session Saturday, October 14th through the 30th in the historical Chadbourne Carriage House at the Fremont Hub, brave souls aged five and older can witness what lurks among the library books, learn the spells of a spooky classroom, and see what grows in a gloomy garden. But if joining ghouls, ghosts, witches, and warlocks in school make you nervous, a Good Fairy will happily guide you through your journey. Academy fees are $2 per person, $1.50 for organized groups.

The frightful mysteries of the ever-changing Ghost House are provided for the 37th year by the Candle Lighters. Founded in 1969 as fundraisers for the local YMCA Building Fund, Candle Lighters has grown into a non-profit social organization made up of nearly 130 women volunteers serving the Tri-City community. The annual Ghost House is their singular event and the source of all donatable dollars, allowing Candle Lighters to give away $45,000 to $50,000 a year to various non-profit groups. Groups apply for consideration in June, and up to ten are chosen to receive funds. This year's top $15,000 will go to the city of Fremont's water park, completing donations from consecutive years. Among others who will benefit from Candle Lighters funds are Hers Breast Cancer Foundation, Niles Essanay Film Museum, Friends of Ash Street Community Environment (FACE), Child Abuse Prevention Agency (CAPA), and Niles Merchant Association.

Beyond the spooks and thrills of the Ghost House is a midway of games, a country store, caramel apples, and other tasty treats. A "Kiddie Parade" will be held Saturday the 21st at 3:00 p.m. Little ones, infants to age 8, will be led around the grounds by the American High School band as they show off their costumes, win prizes, and receive special goodie bags. Participants will meet at the little gazebo between the Ghost House and The Elephant Bar.  Don't miss the magic of "The Witching Academy;" you never know what knowledge might creep over you!
