CSD victimized by Harker long bombs

by Biff Jones

California School for the Deaf, Fremont played Harker of San Jose last Thursday, Sept. 28 in an intersectional varsity football game on the Eagles campus.  CSD, with a record of 0-3, entered the game looking for its first win of the 2006 season.  Harker was looking to move up to the .500 mark as it had a record of 1-2.

CSD received the opening kick-off.  On its first possession the Eagles continued their early season woes of turnovers by fumbling away the ball on their own 35 yard line, barely one minute into the game.  Harker immediately capitalized by scoring on a 1 yard quarterback sneak at the 8:36 mark of the first quarter to take a 6-0 lead (the point after was no good).

Things got worse for CSD in the first quarter as they lost senior running back and linebacker Kyle Benedict in the middle of the quarter and junior tight end and defensive end Matthew MacDonald later in the quarter to injuries.  Both appeared to have suffered shoulder injuries and neither would return to the game.

With 2:34 to go in the first quarter, the aerial barrage began as Harker completed an 85 yard  wide receiver, pass and run, to take a 14-0 lead after the successful two point conversion.  In the second quarter Harker struck twice again with the long bombs on a 40 yard pass early in the quarter and a 73 yard pass and run with 4:40 to go in the half.  Both second quarter PAT attempts were missed and Harker held a 26-0 lead at the half.

The third quarter offered a ray of hope for the Eagles as they came out of the break fired up.  Harker received the second half kick-off and went three and out. On the attempted punt, the snap sailed over the head of the Harker punter and was recovered in the end zone for a touchdown by the Eagles Aaron Bye (Bye also had a good offensive game as Benedict's replacement).  The PAT by Nicholas Lopez of CSD was good to make the score 26-7.  Although the third quarter started well for CSD, it did not end that way.  After a 15 yard personnel foul penalty against the Eagles, Harker completed its aerial assault on a 50 yard TD pass with less than a minute to go in the third.

With Benedict out, star CSD senior running back, Andy Fernandez, was kept bottled up most of the day by the Harker defense.  Finally, late in the fourth quarter Fernandez began to find some running room.  After a 25 yard TD run by Fernandez was called back at 2:30 to go in the fourth on a holding penalty, he scored on a 15 yard run with only 00:44 remaining in the contest.  The two point PAT attempt was at first successful on a pass from Hernandez to Brandon Dean.  However, it was called back on a penalty and the re-try was no good, to make the final score Harker 33, CSD 13.  Harker improved to 2-2 while CSD fell to 0-4.

Next up for CSD is Thursday, the 5th, against Heritage of Brentwood at 7:30 p.m.,with the JV game at 5:00 p.m.  Portable lights will be brought in as it will be Homecoming on the Fremont campus of CSD at 39350 Gallaudet Drive.
