Special Kids Fishing Derby and pier dedicationby Shelly Lewis
Thursday, October 5, will be a special day for special needs kids and fishing lovers. Members of the public are invited to attend the dedication and opening of a new fishing pier, cleverly designed to meet provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act year round in the lakes fluctuating water levels of Horseshoe Lake at Quarry Lakes in Fremont.
"The new pier is a wonderful addition to the park," says Carol Severin, East Bay Regional Park District Board of Directors president. "The water level in the lake is at its lowest right now. In the spring, the pier could be 20 to 30 feet higher and still remain stable and accessible for park visitors to fish, relax over the water or just enjoy the views."
Quarry Lakes Regional Recreation Area is a partnership between Alameda County Water District, the City of Fremont and East Bay Regional Park District. The park officially opened in 2001. It is located at 2250 Isherwood Way in Fremont.
