Mission San Jose Little League Claims District 14, 10-11 All-Star Championship
by Biff Jones & Linda Curtis
Mission San Jose's 10-11 All-Stars squeaked by the All-Stars from Newark American Little League, winning an exciting 11-10 ball game. After allowing just one run in the first two games of the tournament, Mission found themselves down 8-0 in the second inning of the championship game against the Newark American team.
NALL struck early by taking a commanding 8-0 lead with five runs in the first inning and three in the second. Not willing to give up, the Mission team scored two runs in the third inning when Kenny Jacoby and Kevin Finch banged out singles, and Scott Havard produced a sacrifice fly to left field. Mission struck again in the fifth - putting up six runs to tie the score. Matt Eike and Reid Marion singled, Havard roped a double and James Gaffey topped off the scoring with a bases loaded single that brought in two runs. Gaffey then wisely stayed in a rundown between first and second to allow the tying run to come in.
After Newark went up 10-8 in the top of the sixth, Mission had their backs against the wall. Mission loaded the bases when Adam Curtis legged out an infield hit, Jeff Chu was hit by a pitch and Havard drew a walk. Reid Marion stepped to the plate with two outs and placed a single into right field, scoring all three runners, and ending the game, 11-10 Mission. Standouts on defense for Mission were Curtis on second base, Brandon Facha on third, and outfielders Jacoby and Marion. Havard pitched very effectively for the final three innings.
