W.O.W.! Get Your Free Diabetes Screening

Mobile Health Clinic Makes Receiving Preventive Care Easy

by Washington Hospital

Next month, Washington Hospital Healthcare System’s mobile health clinic, Washington On Wheels, will make it easy for local residents to get screened for diabetes – for free.

Washington On Wheels, or W.O.W., travels throughout the Tri-City area on a regular basis providing quality health care services to uninsured and underserved segments of the population and began providing free diabetes screenings last year.

“Many residents without health insurance don’t receive any health care services because they can’t afford it,” says Ruth Traylor, director of Community Outreach at Washington Hospital. “Therefore illnesses may go untreated. The W.O.W. Mobile Health Clinic provides a much needed service regardless of ability to pay so that all community members can receive health care.”

Catching diabetes early

Last summer, according to Traylor, W.O.W. performed approximately 500 free screenings for diabetes. Owing to last year’s overwhelming success, the program will offer free diabetes screenings on three different dates between August and September.

“Statistics show that 20.8 million Americans have diabetes, and 41 million have pre-diabetes,” Traylor says. “Almost 6 percent of Alameda County residents have diabetes, and a third of that population doesn’t know it. If left untreated, diabetes can lead to stroke, blindness and even death.”

Of those screened in 2005, W.O.W. staff members diagnosed 29 people who were high risk for diabetes and 94 that were moderate risk for diabetes. Ranging in age from 18 months to over 90-years-old, patients were urged to follow up with their primary care providers.

Taking care of the community

“If a patient doesn’t have a primary care physician, W.O.W. staff can work with them to set up care,” Traylor notes.

This year’s screening dates are as follows:

  • Aug. 10: Newark Community Center located at 35501 Cedar Blvd.; 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

  • Aug. 24: Newark Senior Center located at 7401 Enterprise Drive; 9:30 a.m. to noon

  • Sept. 17: Newark Days Festival; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Under the direction of Medical Director Steven Curran, M.D., Nurse Practitioner Sherrie Kneebone and Medical Assistant Connie Corral provide a host of other services, including:

  • Physical exams

  • Health screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels for diabetes

  • Immunizations and Flu Shots

  • Foot care

  • Nutritional counseling and health education

  • Occupational medicine*

The Washington On Wheels Mobile Health Clinic accepts Medicare and Medi-Cal and some insurance plans and will provide services regardless of immigration status or ability to pay.

“W.O.W. provides safe and easy access to quality health care,” according to Traylor.
