Betsy Gravett Benefit Tennis Tournament

by Biff Jones

The Betsy Gravett Cancer Foundation will hold its 10th Annual Benefit Tennis Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, July 22-23.

In 1994 Betsy Gravett, an energetic mother and talented tennis teaching pro, was diagnosed with an aggressive, inoperable brain tumor. Twelve years later after the initial diagnosis, Betsy is living proof that research, new treatments and innovative procedures can and do work. Betsy would like to give back to all the people that so generously gave to her through the years.

The tournament was established in 1997 as a women's doubles event to raise funds for cancer research and to provide assistance to individuals struggling with cancer. It was conceived by Betsy's good friend, Kim Ferrier, who was seeking a way to acknowledge Betsy's valiant fight with brain tumors and to provide an opportunity for a community of people to pull together and make a difference. Friends and colleagues have eagerly supported the tournament as an on-going tribute to Betsy's personal and professional impact in the world of tennis. Since '97, the foundation has raised over $200,000 and given out 45 grants (16 last year alone) to families in need.

What began as a women's doubles tournament, now includes men as well. Participants may register with their doubles partner, or if they do not have one, will be matched with a playing partner by the tournament committee. Women's and men's doubles teams at levels 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5 are eligible to participate.

The entry fee is $75 and includes a two-match guarantee, player gift with tournament logo, continental breakfast, light lunch, awards dinner for two Sunday evening at 6 p.m. at Mission Hills, silent auction, raffle prizes and a chance to play tennis with friends for a great cause. Those who do not wish to play tennis can simply enjoy dinner at a reduced cost or donate money to the foundation. Items may also be donated for the silent auction. These must be received by July 18.

Entry deadline is July 14, with checks payable to "The Betsy Gravett Cancer Foundation." Entries can be mailed to Louise Ng, 3437 Tice Creek Drive, Apartment 2, Walnut Creek, CA 94595.

For more information, visit or call (925) 934-1879. Entry forms and donation record forms maybe downloaded (both PDF format) from the web site.
