Veterans Jessica Wellman, Andrew Dugoni and McKenzie Campana paced the Highlands Sharks to a 546-489 win over the host South Gate Penguins in the season's first meet. Wellman raced two wins in the 15 to 18-year-old girls' 50 breast and the 100 individual medley. Dugoni captured the 15 to 18 boys' 50-yard butterfly and 50 backstroke events, and his relay took second in the 200 free. Campana placed first in the 15 to 18 girls' 50 free and 50 butterfly. Wellman and Campana led their relay to second in the 200 free.
Highlands did especially well in the 100 medley relays, romping to five firsts and seven seconds while dominating the 11 to 12 girls' 200 medley, finishing 1-2-3. Katie Moran, Alyssa Castillou, Emilie Williams and Jacqueline Kohler swam on the winning team. Castillou also raced to a win in the 11-12 50 breast, while younger sister Cara won the 9-10 25 free. Williams sprinted to a first in the 50 Free, in addition to joining Kohler, Moran and Mikhalya Crawford on the winning 200 free relay team.
Drew Kobayashi (25 free) and Madeline David (25 free) brought home firsts for Highlands. In the 13-14 girls' 50 free, Shelley Wenzel paced a Highlands sweep, with Sharks taking the first six positions. Chloe Wei's relay team took first in the 8-under 100 medley; she also placed first in her 25 free.
