Growing up Asian in Americaby Mona Sharma
Weibel Elementary fifth-grader, Moniyka Sachar is regional winner of the "Growing up Asian in America" essay competition. This is the largest celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage in the nation. Moniyka's work, titled "Melting Locals" describes her experiences as an Indian growing up American. She cleverly used the multicultural Bharat Bazaar as an opening metaphor to her essay.
The award ceremony took place at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. The art and essay contest is open to students in kindergarten through grade 12 in nine Bay Area counties. A commemorative publication with all the winning entries is on display at the Fremont Main Library. |
