People who have felt the leaden touch of cancer in their lives will begin running and walking this month in Relay For Life events throughout the Bay Area. Partnered with the American Cancer Society, Relay For Life is a 20+ year tradition dedicated to raising money for cancer research, supporting those facing the disease, celebrating survivors and remembering those that have been lost.  Teams comprised of friends, family, and co-workers gather at various locations to run, walk, or jog for 24 hours, fuelled by the hope of one day eliminating cancer.

Union City will host a kick-off reception on Tuesday, June 6 at the Ruggieri Senior Center leading to their first Relay For Life event on August 5.  The reception is a free evening designed to get people together; those belonging to a team, those interested in joining one, or those looking to be sponsors.  Over Starbucks coffee and muffins attendees can watch a video explaining how Relay For Life works, pick up literature, and talk to organizers and past participants.  The intent is to get cancer survivors aware of the relay and all of the programs (many of them free) available through the American Cancer Society, and to educate the public on the various forms of cancer among us.
