OneChild, two fundraisersby Arathi Satish
Non-profit organization, OneChild, believes that all children deserve the basic necessities to be successful in school. Thus, OneChild is committed to providing underprivileged children with new clothes and school supplies. Two fundraisers are planned in June.
The first will be their annual fundraiser birthday party for founder Bernadine (Bernie) Dutra on June 2 at the Dutra residence Then on June 29, the inaugural OneChild Charity Golf Tournament will tee-off at Poppy Ridge Golf Course in Livermore.
At OneChild's Clothing the Spirit store, needy children can shop free of charge for new clothes and supplies, helping them experience the same sense of pride and self esteem as other children. OneChild has received help from community sources including grants from Fremont Bank and SBC. In February, Irvington High School students organized Avidity Charity Fashion Show to benefit OneChild's programs. The organization has also been working with Healthy Start, Tri-City Homeless Coalition and Fremont Resource Center to identify and serve needy children.
On behalf of OneChild, Ms. Dutra recently received the coveted Jefferson Award, honoring Bay Area recipients for their uncommon dedication to the service of others. It was presented by CBS-5, KCBS and the San Francisco Chronicle. Bernie Dutra envisions eventually having a facility for children of all ages that would include tutoring services and recreational activities in addition to the clothing and school supplies. "OneChild has been my passion since its beginning," states Ms. Dutra. "These events will enable us to continue our efforts in providing the basic necessities to needy school children to ensure their success."
