38th Annual Textile Exhibit

by Arathi Satish

The current exhibit at the city of Fremont's Olive Hyde Art Gallery has a bit of local history behind it. The gallery's Annual Textile Exhibit is in honor of Olive Hyde, founder of the Olive Hyde Art Gallery. In 1962, she generously donated to the city of Fremont, the property and buildings where the Olive Hyde Art Gallery, Olive Hyde Art Center, and Studio Arts building are located.

Hyde was known for her interest in the fields of history, conservation, teaching, and music. Her quest to bring art to the Fremont community is honored every year through the Annual Textile Exhibit as a tribute to her foresight and generosity. The exhibit features quality work in textile and fiber art; contemporary artwork that incorporates fibers as a material or concept is also on display.

The artists include: Liz Berg, Cory Gunther Brown, Barbara Confer, Emily Dvorin, Rosemary Eichorn, Darcy Fowkes, Norma A. Fox, Joy Gladding, Beverly Harrington, Eva Henneberry, Julie Hirota, Debra Hosler, Marjan Kluepfel, Laura Koehler, Kim Marguerite LaPolla, Barbetta Lockhart, Stephanie Metz, Denise Oyama Miller, Lisa Rico, Jan Schafir, Nina Shortridge, Bonnie Stack, Marcia Stein, Carol Tavares, Lillian Whipple and Peng-Peng Wang.

This year's exhibit, dominated by a display of beautiful quilts, needs to be seen to be appreciated. The display includes the needle felted wool work of Stephanie Tetz, a beautiful collection of vases by Laura Koehler and the creative work of Peng-Peng Wang. Interesting artwork of Cory Gunter Brown and original pieces of artwork made out of an electric fan cover, clothespins, plastic netting, cable ties, bobbins of thread, etc. by Emily Dvorin are fascinating counterpoints to striking and intricately stitched quilts by Marcia Stein, Rosemary Eichorn, Julie Hirota, Marjan Kluepfel, Eva Henneberry and others. More than 25 artists will display their work in this eclectic and thought-provoking collection.

A special Fiber Art Cloth Creation workshop with Julie Hirota is being held on Saturday, May 6 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registration is $69.
