Magic at the Mission
by Elaine Grimmer
Did you know that more than 10,000 school children visit the Old Mission San Jose each year? Over 60,000 visitors from the state and beyond partake of the educational, cultural experience of this historic facility. Generations of students and visitors from both the religious and secular sectors have enjoyed and continue to enjoy the legacy of a past way of life- its cultures, customs, and architecture. From the early 1900s citizens and citizen groups, recognizing the value of preserving this historic complex for future generations, have come forward to maintain and preserve the mission buildings.
The Committee for Restoration of the Mission San Jose is proud to present The Mission Magic Gala on Friday, May 5 at the Fremont Marriott Hotel. This black tie optional event will include no-host cocktails, dinner, a silent auction/raffle, and live music with dancing. Tickets are $100 per person or $1,000 for a table of 10.
Proceeds benefit Phase III of a three phase project. Phase I, completed in 1985, was a $5 million project reconstructing the 1809-1968 adobe church. Phase II, a $1.2 million project, completed in 2002, was the seismic retrofit of the mission museum, the oldest historical building in Alameda County.
Phase III, estimated to cost between $3-5 million, will rebuild the missing section between the current adobe church and the mission museum. Formerly the padres' living quarters, the exterior will be rebuilt to historical accuracy of the 1830s mission period. Approximately 3,700 square feet of additional space will be added to the mission complex providing for increased display space, multi-use gathering space, audio-visual center, and lecture hall. In addition, we hope to provide an interactive computer room for visitors and students to research and explore the life and times of the mission period.
The Committee for Restoration of the Mission San Jose was formed in 1973 by a group of local citizens to continue the tradition of restoration and preservation. We invite you to be a part of this effort to maintain the Old Mission San Jose as a historical and educational facility for all to enjoy.
Sponsorships, program advertisements, and dinner reservations for this event are available and auction items are needed. For more information call (510) 657-1797 ext. 103.
