Young Artists Showcase

by Arathi Satish

The Fremont Cultural Arts Council's 19th annual Young Artists Showcase will be presented on Sunday, April 30, at Smith Center, Ohlone College. This local youth program provides an opportunity for critique by qualified judges and awards cash scholarships to showcase participants and selected visual artists. Auditions were open to amateur performers, ensemble, or group in the disciplines of Drama, Dance, Vocal and Instrumental; Visual Arts segments include Photography, Sculpture and Painting (all media). Showcase is filmed for later cable television broadcast.

"This program has been a labor of love for several dedicated committee members. We all feel it is great to focus on and provide recognition for the Tri-Cities and Bay Area's talented youth," said Mary Wolfe, chairwoman of the Young Artists Showcase who has served on the Fremont Cultural Arts Council for over 20 years. In addition, art and photography winners and those receiving honorable mention will be on display at the Smith Center on April 30 and at the Fremont Main Library throughout May.

"We now have students of former winners who are now winners themselves - second generation winners so to speak. The respect in which young artists showcase is held is very rewarding," said Mary.

Junior Division is open to artists through 14 years of age as of April 30 and Senior Division is open to artists 15 through 22 years of age as of April 30. As Mary pointed out, "It's not too late to participate in the visual arts portion of the showcase. Art and photography will be accepted at the FCAC office on April 28 from 7 to 8 p.m. and on April 29 from 10 a.m. to noon.

Although young performing artists have other opportunities to play in front of audiences in recitals and shows, here they are able to experience the audition process and review judge's constructive comments. Margaret Thornberry, president, FCAC says, "Attending auditions for the Young Artists Showcase is such a thrill for me. I'm always stunned by how talented these young people are, and I really enjoy meeting them and their families. Not everyone is chosen for the showcase, but everyone who enters is a champion, it takes courage to get up on stage and audition. Our judges offer constructive criticism about how to improve each performance, and we hope those who aren't selected this year will be back to try out again next year."

Finalists in dance, drama, instrumental and music categories will perform on Sunday, April 30 at 3 p.m. at Smith Center for the Fine and Performing Arts, Ohlone College, 43600 Mission Boulevard, Fremont. Scholarships of $50 will be awarded to Showcase participants and winning visual artists. Visual Arts winners and honorable mentions will be displayed at the Showcase.

Tickets for the Showcase are available at the door, adults $6 and $4 for students (12 and under) and seniors. For more information or applications, call the Fremont Cultural Arts Council at (510) 793-6060 or visit www.fremontculturalartscouncil.org.
