A Whole New World of Star Struck Magic
by Claire Mendonca
Welcome to Agrabah, City of Enchantment, where every beggar has a story and every camel has a tail! So begins the magic and mayhem of Star Struck Theatre's production of Disney's "Aladdin Jr.," performing April 21 through April 23 at Mission San Jose High School. This is the stage adaptation of Disney's hit movie, filled with genies and flying carpet rides. The 1992 movie won Academy Awards for Alan Menken, Howard Ashman and Tim Rice's musical score and also for best song, "A Whole New World." The music and stage direction of Star Struck's "Aladdin Jr.," under the creative hands of Lori Stokes and Jeanne Batacan-Harper brings your favorite characters from Disney's "Aladdin" to life in this amazing production.
The tale of Aladdin originates in the stories of the historic novel, "Arabian Nights" which also includes the tales of "Sindbad the Sailor" and "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves." Aladdin is the story of a poor thief who falls in love with a beautiful princess. Aladdin releases a genie from a magic lamp and embarks on the adventure of a lifetime.
In the Star Struck production, you'll find superb acting and singing by James M. Jones as Aladdin and Emily Sutedja as Princess Jasmine. The large production numbers "Friend Like Me" and "Prince Ali" are thrilling to watch as the full ensemble energizes the stage with animated choreography by Batacan-Harper. The colorful harem pants and veils by costumer Angela Matthews and versatile set design by Cat McConnell carries your imagination to Arabia of 850 A.D.
Notables in the cast include Estaban Gonzalez, arrogantly sneering his lines as the nefarious Jafar, Helina Wang as the wise-cracking Iago, Kelly Burns as the winsome flying carpet and Vicky Lopez performing the Genie with rapid fire delivery and comic impersonations.
James M. Jones' performance as Aladdin is charming and endearing. Seen most recently as the "Snail with the Mail" in the Star Struck production of "A Year With Frog and Toad" at Smith Center Ohlone College, Jones will capture your heart as the young hero, Aladdin. Emily Sutedja is a stunning beauty as the sweet but independent Princess Jasmine.
Star Struck's 27 performers under the age of 18 make up this fine ensemble. The production is 90 minutes in length. Don't forget to take a picture with Aladdin and Jasmine after the show. Star Struck's "Aladdin Jr." is an unforgettable experience your family will love as you enter, "A Whole New World."
